The four-poster bed evolved from a canopy bed (also known as a test bed) created for purely functional reasons: warmth and privacy. The curtains were originally suspended from the ceiling, but evolved as the frame was added to the bed to support the top awning, which helped to keep warm. (There are people who say that the canopy stops the creature from falling from the thatched roof to the bed.)

The outer awning frame was retained on some beds and dropped on the other beds, but the four high support columns still exist. The wall feel created by this type of bed is psychologically gratifying, and it may be the reason why the four-poster bed maintains its popularity.
